Three Standout Saints: Brighton (H)
After failing to address their needs in the transfer window, the Saints have once again disappointed with a 1-1 draw against Brighton at St Mary’s on Wednesday night.
Southampton controlled possession and were dominant in shot-taking, however, they still couldn’t get all three points.
The visitors opened the scoring in the 14th minute as Wesley Hoedt tripped Solly March in the box and Glenn Murray calmly converted the penalty to put the Seagulls ahead.
Southampton’s best opportunity in the first half came in the 32nd minute as Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg chased down Mathew Ryan, but the ball ricocheted off him and bounced off the bar.
Saints finally got their equaliser in the 64th minute as Jack Stephens cleverly flicked the ball pass Ryan from a low-driven James Ward-Prowse free-kick.
The Saints displayed a poor performance in the first-half but redeemed themselves after the break and so here are my ‘Three Standout Saints’.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg
The Danish international put in a great effort in Wednesday’s night game. He looked confident in taking shots from range and looked determined to chase the ball down. His efforts were almost rewarded as he chased down the opposing goalkeeper but unfortunately, the ball cannoned off the bar.
James Ward-Prowse
James Ward-Prowse once again showcased his quality in his set-piece delivery with an excellent assist to help Southampton equalise. Throughout the game, he looked to be making good opportunities with fantastic crosses into the box and looked very strong and confident on the right side of midfield.
Jack Stephens
Jack Stephens looks to be in the form of his life; he has now scored two in two for the Saints and he is improving as a defender each game. He helped Southampton to a 1-0 win in the FA Cup against Watford on Saturday by scoring and a couple of days later he gifted Southampton a valuable point with another goal. Not only is his goal scoring form commendable, his defensive efforts have been excellent recently.
