Southampton were disappointing again, as they dropped points against Huddersfield at St. Mary’s on Saturday.
The Saints were held to a 1-1 draw, having been in front for a large chunk of the match.
Charlie Austin opened the scoring midway through the first-half when he glanced the ball in from Wesley Hoedt’s flick-on.
However, the centre-forward then missed a superb chance to double Southampton’s lead when he volleyed wide one-on-one with the ‘keeper after excellent play from Nathan Redmond.
Huddersfield then grabbed their equaliser as Yoshida lost his man in the box and Laurent Depoitre powered a header in from six-yards out.
Virgil Van Dijk was omitted from the matchday squad, hinting at a possible January move for the Dutch defender.
He was joined in the stands by Ryan Bertrand and Cedric Soares, who were both ruled out with injuries ahead of the clash.
Picking a man of the match has been relatively easy for this match. One man stood out above the rest, metaphorically and physically.
Our Southampton man of the match against Huddersfield is… Wesley Hoedt!
The towering Dutch defender was immense at the back, with arguably his best performance in a Saints shirt to date.
He won every ball in the area, stood strong in his tackles and was excellent on the ball. He drove the team forward from defence, much like the absent Virgil Van Dijk is known for.
