Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand reveals that he believes Mauricio Pellegrino’s “refresher” meetings with the players helped the side to come together and get the three points against Everton in the Premier League, according to a report on the Daily Echo.
Bertrand revealed that the manager gathered the players to talk through the problems that they’ve had so far this season and how to correct them which got the team focused on the basic elements of their game.
It was just getting back to basics: a refresher. We got back to basics. It was nothing drastic and the manager really got hold of us and got us into shape and we gave him that performance.
It was easy to fix. We just needed a refresher and start really putting the work in. Small adjustments paid dividends.
The Saints ended up beating Everton 4-1, with Bertrand playing a key part by assisting two of the goals.
The fans of the club were becoming agitated with the club’s performances in the league and Bertrand believes that recent successful campaigns have put an expectation on the side to be pushing for a top half finish.
There is no danger but we’ve done well the last few years and we’ve got big expectations now, so we weren’t happy with a lot of things. Everyone thought we should have more and deserve more, so we needed to get back to that.
