Southampton have officially confirmed the signing of Jan Bednarek from Polish side Lech Poznan.
As per usual, Saints vice-chairman Les Reed spoke to the club’s official website about his recent signing, and explained his role at the club in the near future.
“Jan is an extremely promising young player who possesses significant potential. We are delighted to bring him to the club, and we believe this will be the ideal place for him to continue his development.”
Reed also pointed out that the young defender can learn directly from new Saints manager Mauricio Pellegrino:
“This is a particularly exciting time for him to arrive here, as he also has the opportunity to learn from Mauricio Pellegrino’s extensive experience of playing the centre-back position.”
He then explained specifically that Bednarek has been added to the squad as back-up:
“Jan provides additional depth to the impressive amount we have in that area, with Virgil van Dijk, Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens having all performed so impressively there last season, and he provides us with another excellent central defensive option.”
Bednarek joins for a fee worth around £5.5m and has cemented himself in the history books with this move. The sale from Lech Poznan is the most expensive in the history of Polish football from an Ekstraklasa club.
The 21-year-old will look to prove to the club that he is worth his weight in gold now, by taking his chances in the coming season.
