Liverpool avoid punishment over Virgil van Dijk pursuit

Liverpool look set to avoid punishment over pursuit of Virgil van Dijk, as per a report from Jeremy Wilson of the Telegraph.

The Reds issued an apology to Southampton via the club’s official website after the Saints asked the Premier League to investigate a possible illegal approach after numerous outlets reported that the player had decided that he wanted to join Liverpool.

Southampton have not officially withdrawn their complaint but they have also not produced any new evidence to the Premier League since  Liverpool made the apology and as such, the league are set to accept that the clubs have resolved the issue without the need for their interference.

Saints are said to have evidence to back up their complaint but it looks like they’ve decided to let the matter rest after Liverpool’s public apology.

The Reds already have a ban in place which prevents them from signing academy players after a tapping up incident and they were very keen to avoid a punishment at senior level, so this news will be most welcome.
