Southampton are reportedly looking at their first swoop of the summer in the form of Middlesbrough centre back Ben Gibson.
The young English defender was one of the very few stand-out performers on Teeside last season, and this has prompted interest from elsewhere.
With Virgil van Dijk’s move to Liverpool collapsing recently, it’s claimed by the Northern Echo that the Saints had lined Gibson up to replace him at the heart of the defence, however now they seemingly want him to partner the Dutchman.
Gibson has shown his quality on the ball this season and has established himself as a strong Premier League defender. However, new Boro manager Garry Monk has expressed his desire in keeping his key asset this summer.
Saints remain on the lookout for new defensive reinforcements as they look to finally replace Jose Fonte with a sustainable option, and Gibson could very well prove to be the man for the job.
