Assessing the potential Chinese takeover of Southampton FC

The summer is often a turbulent time of year for the Saints and their fans.

With constant media speculation linking players with moves away, the ever changing odds of a manager’s departure and deciphering cryptic messages from players’ social media accounts, it never seems to be a settled period for the club.

This year is different though. Of course, we are still seeing everything that is listed above and this year it has started before the transfer window has even opened, but we now have something new discuss: the potential takeover bid for Southampton FC by foreign investors.

It has been reported through many mainstream newspapers that Lander Holdings are in discussions with Katharina Liebherr about potentially purchasing a majority stake in the football club that her late father saved from administration in 2009.

At the time of writing, there has been no formal agreement between Saints and the Chinese Consortium but it is reported that Lander Holdings are closest to securing a deal in the region of £210m.

But what does this mean for Saints’ fans? Admittedly, the knock-on effect of any takeover is relatively unknown at this stage and will ultimately depend on how much of the business is eventually sold.

There is the possibility that new investors could provide a cash-injection with a view to taking Southampton to the the next level in terms of domestic and, ultimately, European Football. Recent takeovers have demonstrated that the additional financial clout can give a football club the ability to begin attracting a higher calibre of player.

There will also be the hope that this will also enable Southampton to compete more effectively with the bigger clubs in terms of wages, helping to keep their best players at St Mary’s. But at what cost?

Despite a relatively disappointing campaign in 2016/17, Saints’ fans are very proud of the club, its image, philosophy and financial stability; all of which could change under new ownership. One of the main concerns amongst the Southampton faithful will be that the reputation built over the past few years as a strong, up-and-coming, well run football club with a world-class academy could be jeopardised. The supporters have already experienced financial turmoil and poor ownership in the not-so-distant past and will be guarded against that happening again.

It wouldn’t be unreasonable to say that the majority of Saints’ fans trust Katharina’s judgement and that she has the best of intentions for the club and her father’s legacy, but this trust will be tested as more information about the possible takeover becomes available.

The name “Gao Jisheng” is one that is likely to become more familiar with Southampton followers over the next few months as the founder of Lander Holdings and the potential new owner of the South Coast club. Reports of corruptions claims and the chequered past of Gao is unlikely to ease the concerns of supporters during this already unsettled period.

Southampton wouldn’t be the first English club to be bought by Chinese investors and would be joining teams such as Aston Villa, Wolves and West Brom in that category. The general pattern among these takeovers is that the investors are keen to leave the existing management in place, something which will be key to securing the short-term success of Southampton.

Talks of this nature are always going to lengthy, private and disruptive and fans could be forgiven for being nervous about the immediate and future impact on their team. If Lander Holdings, or indeed any other investor, successfully completes the takeover of Southampton, one thing is for sure; it will definitely change the future of the club for worse or hopefully, for the better.

All we can do is to trust that board will make the right decisions for the sake of the fans.
