Following the sacking of Claude Puel, Southampton intend to interview Frank de Boer and Mauricio Pellegrino for the vacant managerial position, with an announcement expected to be made by the end of next week, according to the Telegraph.
The shortlist appears to have significantly reduced in the last day and interviews are now underway. The favourite was former Borussia Dortmund manager Thomas Tuchel, but he has since ruled himself out of the running.
Former Inter Milan manager Frank de Boer was close to being appointed at St Mary’s last summer, however the club opted for Claude Puel after Ronald Koeman’s exit to Premier League rivals Everton. Instead he went to Milan, but left last year. He is regarded as suitable for the Saints position due to his preference of bringing through young talent, which matches Saints’ philosophy.
Mauricio Pellegrino left Deportivo Alaves in La Liga at the end of last season after a very impressive campaign. The newly-promoted side took the league by storm, finishing in ninth position and reaching the Copa del Rey final, only to be beaten 2-1 at the hands of Barcelona.
It’s stated in the report that there is another candidate under consideration, however Saints are keen to appoint quickly, and one of these candidates would be seemingly ideal.
