Liverpool apologised to Southampton over their approach for captain Virgil van Dijk yesterday, while also confirming that they have ended their interest in the Dutchman.
This comes as music to Southampton ears, offering hope that the club may be able to retain their key man for at least another year.
However, this pleasing news does throw Van Dijk’s future at the club into the balance, surrounding uncertainty over what happens next.
With the storm clouds seeming to have passed, and things looking brighter, Saints fans have belief that Van Dijk will stay. If he does, then this will delight all supporters alike, and I’m sure will earn him a massive reception on his return to the St Mary’s field.
Staying at Saints will have many perks for the 25-year-old Dutch international. He can get plenty of game-time, captaining a Saints team pushing to get back onto the European Stage, and offering a sense of worth and support. Being given the captain’s armband can give him self-belief and confidence, helping to become a better and more mature player, which will certainly help him in the long run. Confidence and game-time is what any player wants and needs to be successful, and this honour could light a spark in Van Dijk and make him really shine.
However, the transfer rumours do not end here. Chelsea and Manchester City both still have reported interest in Van Dijk, with large offers potentially being tabled by both sides. Chelsea are looking to solidify their defence as they look to retain their Premier League crown, and Virgil will certainly offer strong competition with Gary Cahill and David Luiz for a starting place in Antonio Conte’s brilliant side.
Manchester City seem to have had a defensive problem for the majority of the season, and Van Dijk will certainly fill some gaps for Pep Guardiola. With fans unconvinced by John Stones, the Saints captain can challenge the Englishman and potentially be a long term replacement for Vincent Kompany.
Liverpool were the main contenders to sign Virgil van Dijk, and with them out of the race things do look good for the South Coast side, as Manchester City have already spent big this summer even though the transfer window is yet to open, and Chelsea are also yet to make a move.
But if Virgil stays, I’m sure he will instantly become a cult hero, with Saints fans savouring each and every one of his performances. He is a joy to watch and an asset to the side.
