Southampton 0-2 Arsenal – Five who impressed

After a disapointing evening at St Mary’s, Arsenal went home with all three points after goals from Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud.

Southampton’s movement and desire in the final third was poor. As expected, Arsenal dominated possession and just wanted it more than the Southampton side did. The hosts were decent in the first half and created a few chances but just lacked that drive in the final ball. The second half was one to forget for Southampton fans; lacklustre defending and jogging back to defend cost us in the end.

Arsenal hadn’t won at St Mary’s in the league since 2003, so you would’ve expected them to come out all guns blazing and that’s exactly what they did, but the Gunners struggled to break down the Southampton defence in the first half and it took them about 20 minutes to find their feet. Southampton were not clinical enough in the first half and it definitely cost us. We all knew Arsenal wouldn’t need many chances as they have that quality up front that Southampton do not have.

There were a couple of standout performances and Southampton did have a few good spells in the game and defended well at times, so here’s our look at five who impressed us for Southampton.
