Arsenal haven’t had the best of times at St Mary’s in the league, not winning there since 2003.
Sadly though, the last time they travelled to the south coast to play Southampton was earlier on this season when Arsenal went home happy with a 5-0 victory and a ticket to the next round of the FA Cup.
A weakened Southampton side, made up of kids and fringe players failed to deal with Danny Welbeck, Theo Walcott and co. It was clear that Claude Puel had other things on his mind when selecting his team for that game. We can all look back and laugh now; it’s not that the team was poor, but there was no chemistry and the performance was lacklustre at times.
None of us are expecting a similar score line come Wednesday night and we’re definitely expecting to see a much better side and performance. Danny Welbeck stole the show for them last time out and managed to get himself two goals and Theo Walcott bagged himself a hat-trick. Although Southampton were poor on the night, it doesn’t take away from what danger Arsenal can cause on their day.
I’m sure most Saints fans will be worried about Wednesday night considering Southampton’s recent from against top six sides, but Arsenal haven’t won at St Mary’s in the league since 2003. That in itself is a surprising statistic but Southampton haven’t won a game against a top six team this season in the league, so it’s fairly balanced in terms of facts.
Last time out, Southampton were awful. Let’s hope for a better showing this time.
