Southampton put in a solid defensive performance to hold Liverpool to a 0-0 draw at Anfield.
The valuable point pushed Claude Puel’s side back into the top half of the table and into tenth, but Liverpool’s chance of increasing the gap in third place away from Manchester City took a blow.
There weren’t many clear cut chances throughout the game, but Liverpool looked dominant throughout, and the Saints spent most of the time in the first half on the back foot.
Southampton got back into it in the second half, creating a few chances that probably should have tested Liverpool keeper Simon Mignolet.
But it was Liverpool who had the best chance to go ahead, as a slightly controversial handball decision on Jack Stephens in the 66 minute saw the Reds awarded a penalty.
However Fraser Forster, who has been against the critics for the majority this season by most Saints fans, including myself, dived low to his right to stop James Milner giving the Reds the lead heading into the last 20 minutes.
The points would be shared after the final whistle, meaning that Saints carry on their unbeaten run against Liverpool this season, as they kept their fourth clean sheet in the last of their four games together.
