Southampton narrowed the gap between them and West Brom by beating the Baggies 1-0 at the Hawthorns after a wonderful first-half strike from Jordy Clasie.
Claude Puel made two changes from the side that beat Crystal Palace on Wednesday, as suspended Oriol Romeu and injured Steven Davis were replaced by Jordy Clasie and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
Puel’s side dominated the first-half and were unlucky not to score more, but Clasie scored a goal that was similar to his goal against Arsenal in the EFL Cup quarter-final, as the Dutchman struck a beautiful 20-yard shot into the top right corner after a lay-off from Dusan Tadic.
West Brom had a chance soon after the goal, as Nacer Chadli crossed an early ball into Salomon Rondon, but his header was well saved by Fraser Forster.
West Brom had the majority of chances in the second half, but after many more great saves by Forster and some good defending, Saints held on to get an important three points for the season.
