Southampton made it two wins on the bounce yesterday as they saw off a tough West Brom side in a 1-0 win away from home.
It was all set up to be a difficult fixture for Claude Puel and his side, who were without a plethora of key players through either injury or suspension. The midfield was forced into total change off the back of Steven Davis picking up an ankle injury and Oriol Romeu being suspended for two matches, but the makeshift duo of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Jordy Clasie certainly stepped up.
It was, in fact, Clasie who scored the one and only decisive goal in the match, with a superbly driven right-footed strike beyond the reach of Ben Foster in the Baggies goal. The finish was his second for Saints and his first ever in the Premier League.
The win keeps Puel’s side in ninth place but they have closed the gap on eighth place to just four points, with West Brom now under pressure.
Here are our match ratings from the match, including one for Puel.
