Southampton put in a decent performance to fend off a well structured Crystal Palace side and beat them 3-1, gaining a valuable three points at St Mary’s.
Coming into the game, a win would have taken the Saints as high as ninth, but a loss could have taken them all the way down to 15th depending on how other games ended.
Saints’ good start, like most games, didn’t make the difference as Andros Townsend squared the ball to Christian Benteke, who smashed it in from close range to make it 1-0.
Claude Puel’s men finally found an equaliser just before half time despite being denied a penalty, as Steven Davis’ shot fell to Redmond in the box, who chested it down and fired a shot which found it’s way into the bottom corner.
The whole second-half belonged to Saints and after a few golden chances which were well saved and blocked, got themselves in the lead in the 84th minute as Redmond pulled the ball back to Jack Stephens, whose shot found its way to Maya Yoshida at the back post who slammed it in to make it 2-1.
Saints got another quickly after, as Tadic played Cedric Soares down the right hand side of the penalty area, who pulled it back to James Ward-Prowse to get his fourth goal of the season and to cap off a great night at St Mary’s.
Here are my thoughts and points on the game.
