Ahead of the EFL Cup final this weekend, I caught up with ex-Southampton and current Sheffield United striker Billy Sharp, and asked him a few questions about his past at Southampton as well as getting his thoughts on the big day at Wembley against Manchester United.
How do you reflect on your time here at Southampton?
Billy Sharp: Nothing but happy memories. Joined the club in the January transfer window, and helped the club achieve Premiership status.
Do you speak to anyone from your time at Southampton?
BS: Still speak to Adz (Adam Lallana), Foxy (Danny Fox), Dean Hammond, Danny Butterfield, Jack Cork and Richard Chaplow.
How did it feel returning for Kelvin Davis’ Testimonial?
BS: It was great to be welcomed back to St Mary’s for Super Kelvin Davis’ testimonial. A great night for a top pro and servant to Southampton Football Club.
Will you be tuning in for the EFL Cup final, or will you be there to see us (hopefully) lift the trophy?
BS: I will definitely be watching on the TV, but still might try and get to Wembley as it would be a brilliant occasion to experience to Saints at Wembley.
What have you made of the season so far for Saints?
BS: Every season since Southampton got to the Premier League, they have progressed and surprised a lot of people, especially losing their so-called best players each season and change of manager.
Do you often come to St Mary’s nowadays if you get the chance?
BS: My best friend moved to Southampton a few months after I left Southampton to go to Leeds, so that was bad timing haha! I loved living down south but don’t get down often at the minute because of my own career but when I do, I try to get to the games but last time I was down Southampton were playing away. I will be visiting Southampton in the summer when my season finishes as my best friend is due to get married in June.
