Southampton target move for Mark Uth

Mark Uth has burst onto the scene for Hoffenheim this season and it seems his fine form has attracted the attention of two of the Premier League’s biggest clubs.

According to the Mirror, both Tottenham and Southampton are keeping tabs on Uth this season with a view to a possible move this month. With his contract expiring in the summer of 2018, it’s understood that Hoffenheim would only look for around £6m for Uth this month.

The 25-year-old rose through the ranks at FC Koln and made 41 first-team appearances for the German outfit, scoring 16 goals before making the move to the Eredivisie with Heerenveen on a free transfer in the summer of 2012.

It wasn’t until the 2014/15 season before Uth became a regular in the first-team for Heerenveen, scoring 15 goals and recording 11 assists in 32 league appearances. The German caught the eye of Hoffenheim and he returned to the Bundesliga in the summer of 2015 for a reported £1.9m.

Uth’s first season with Hoffenheim was hit and miss but he hit his stride towards the end of the season, scoring in four of the last six Bundesliga games to close out the season.

He’s carried that form into this season where he’s netted five goals in 10 appearances in a season blighted by a two-month injury in the Autumn. Perhaps more impressively, Uth is scoring a goal every 124 minutes this season – a strong minutes/goal ratio.

Germany manager Joachim Löw was considering Uth for a call-up prior to his untimely injury but he will be in consideration again if he keeps his stellar for up in the second half of the season.

Southampton don’t have a player who can consistently find the back of the net with both Charlie Austin and Jay Rodriguez notorious for suffering from injuries. The Saints want to bring in at least one striker and Uth could be someone they look hard at.
