Southampton interested in signing Omar Elabdellaoui on loan

Southampton are one of three Premier League clubs reportedly interested in signing right-back Omar Elabdellaoui from Olympiakos in the January transfer window, sources close to the Greek club have told ESPN.

The Saints have a very capable right-back already in Cedric Soares, but the Euro 2016 winner with Portugal has been perennially linked with a move away from St. Mary’s ever since, with Barcelona among those are said to be keen.

In reserve of Cedric remains Cuco Martina who saw a move to Everton in the summer fall through. Martina, who was signed by Toffees boss Ronald Koeman whilst he was manager of Southampton, is out of contract at the end of the season and is largely expected to leave either this month or in the summer.

Elabdellaoui, a former Manchester City academy player, nearly joined Manchester United in the last January transfer window and is also on the radar of West Ham and Hull.

Capped 23 times by Norway, the 25-year-old joined Olympiakos in the summer of 2014 but so far this term he has made just four appearances for the Greek side who are willing to loan him out with a view to a permanent transfer.

Qualifying as a ‘Home-Grown’ player in English football, Elabdellaoui could make an astute signing.
