Over the course of the 2015/16 season, it became clear that Southampton were lacking quality at right-back.
Despite his wonder goal on his first start against Arsenal, Cuco Martina never really found top form and, at points, his inexperience showed through. Originally bought last summer as a back-up defender to bring depth to the squad, it was never expected that he would play a large part in the team, but he could prove useful next season with regular European football coming to St Mary’s.
Many fans thought Cedric Soares would be the new Nathaniel Clyne when he was signed from Sporting Lisbon. However, this has proved not to be the case. Despite showing great attacking flair and providing glimpses of his defensive ability, Soares simply does not seem like our long term starting right-back.
So, who could we sign to fill this gap in our defence? Here are five players who potentially would be suitable.
