Charlie Austin has insisted that Southampton fans should not compare him to some of the club’s legends just yet, such as Matt Le Tissier and Rickie Lambert.
Austin’s arrival was greeted with great joy by the south coast faithful, with Saints finally signing what they have needed for the past two years; an out-and-out goalscorer. However the English attacker insists that he just wants to be himself and be a cult-hero in his own way.
I say to everyone, I try and score as many goals as I can every time I go on the pitch.
I don’t really want to be known as the new Rickie Lambert or Matthew Le Tissier.
I just want to be myself.
Austin scored 18 Premier League goals during the 2014/15 season and already has 11 this season, in just one Premier League match and 16 Championship outings.
Austin, however says that he isn’t worried about returning to England’s top division.
No, it’s not a concern. My record speaks for itself. Wherever I’ve been I’ve scored goals. I know what the Premier League’s about from the one season I’ve been in. But I’m not taking anything for granted. Goals don’t come if you don’t work hard, so the main thing is to work hard first and you’ll get the opportunities.
Luckily that happened to me in the first year and I got the goals, so why can’t it happen now?
Austin has started as he has meant to go on, with an incredible late debut goal to snatch three points for the Saints against Manchester United.
Will Charlie Austin be able to deliver again in the Premier League?
