Southampton midfielder Steven Davis has expressed his delight at continuing his rich vein of goalscoring form in Sunday’s 2-0 derby win over south-coast neighbours Bournemouth.
The Northern Irishman was on hand to apply the finishing touch to a sweeping Southampton move, as he expertly volleyed in Ryan Bertrand’s inch-perfect 31st minute cross to send the Saints on their way to victory. The goal was Davis’ second in his last four Premier League games and represented a dramatic change in fortunes for a player who had previously failed to register in 55 appearances.

The dependable midfielder stalwart spoke to Southampton’s official club website following his latest strike.
“I think I just always try to get into the positions, but it was a great team goal. The boys worked it really well and it was a great ball in from Berty (Ryan Bertrand) and it was nice to get on the end of it, but i have to keep on trying to get into these positions and hopefully get a few more between now and the end of the season. It’s nice to see the ball hitting the back of the net.”
Davis is a vital cog in Ronald Koeman’s side, with the experienced midfielder’s game management, ball retention and tireless running making him one of the first names on the Dutch manager’s team-sheet. Although the Northern Ireland captain is not renowned for his attacking prowess, the St.Mary’s crowd will be delighted to see their unsung hero finally gain some mainstream recognition as a result of his impressive form in front of goal.
