Saints boss Ronald Koeman says he is impressed with Southampton’s overall performance last night.
Southampton dumped Aston Villa out of the Capital One Cup with a 2-1 victory over them at St. Mary’s.
He says that the cup will help to encourage competition in the squad, as it gives opportunity for fringe players, who aren’t guaranteed Premier League game time.
He applauded the fact that his team was so dominant for the second half of the game, however, was disappointed that his team conceded.
We were more aggressive in the second half, with better pressing in midfield and that makes the difference between the first and the second. It was a pity, the 2-1, but okay, the most important is to get to the next round and we knew that.
He says that he wants to try and reach the final for the sake of the fans, so that they may have a trip to Wembley.
He attributes the weaker first-half performances to the team needing to gel together, with it being such a changed line-up, the team needed to get to grips with playing together.
Southamton face south-coast rivals Bournemouth in the Premier League on Sunday at 4pm.
