Ex-Saints and Liverpool midfielder, Jimmy Case, has warned Ronald Koeman’s men about a “fast and furious” approach he expects from Liverpool under their new boss, Jurgen Klopp after being interviewed by saintsfc.co.uk
Case, who won 3 European Cups with Liverpool in the 70s, is confident that Klopp will set up his new team how he did against Tottenham last Saturday. The energetic approach gained a lot of approval from football fans and it wouldn’t be a surprise if the German used it again in front of the Kop.
Sunday will be Klopp’s first Premier League game at Anfield and there’s no doubt that the atmosphere will be electric backing their new man throughout the game. Southampton will go into the game as slight underdogs but will be relishing the chance to upset Klopp in his first home game.
Liverpool go into the game on the back of a 1-1 Europa League draw against Rubin Kazan whilst Southampton let a two-goal lead slip against a Jamie Vardy inspired Leicester side last time out Jimmy Case expects a different approach under the former Dortmund boss, a fast-paced pressing game contradicting to the “patient passing game” under Brendan Rodgers. He compared the style of play to that of Southampton, to which he said, “I’ve great admiration for Southampton in the way they play”.
He expects both teams to go at the game in the same way, which builds the game up to be an exciting contest, two fast teams playing quick one/two touch football whilst being pressured by their counterparts. Case had a lot of praise for the new Liverpool boss saying “He’s the type of manager you want to play for and want to go the extra yard for”, he continued on to compare him to Saints boss, Ronald Koeman, saying ‘He’s a similar type of person… I think the players really want to play for him.”
If both teams show what they’ve already shown this season, it’s certain to be a classic. Be sure to expect a free-flowing, open attacking game with both teams attacking right from the start. A high pressure game matched with high-quality passing play means that either team, Southampton in particular, might be able to snatch a win on the break.
