Republic of Ireland hero and Southampton striker Shane Long wants to help power his country to top spot in Group D. He scored the goal that gave Ireland victory over world champions Germany, and a win today against Poland could see them qualify for their second consecutive European championships.
In order to get first place, they require Germany to lose against Gibraltar, an unlikely scenario. They have sealed at least third place, allowing them to compete in a play-off, or possible qualify as the best third-placed team.
Long’s goal against Germany was not the only important one he has scored in the qualifying campaign, having got an injury time equalizer against Poland in March.
Long believes that his country are good enough to gain top spot.
“There is no reason why we can’t go there and win the game. We know we’re good enough to go there and win.”
Long signed for Southampton from Hull City at the beginning of last season. He has so far made 47 appearances for the club, and got his name on the scoresheet on nine occasions.
Long has been in and out of the Southampton side in recent months but do you think his international form could boost his chances of getting into Ronald Koeman’s plans?
