5 Things We Learnt: Everton
  1. Southampton’s defence is worrisome for the first time in two years.

The Saints have given up 3 counter attacking goals in the Premier League so far, more than all of last season (2). Two of which directly came from the right side, where Matt Targett defends. Bertrand’s absence is directly lead to lapses in defence; his appearances are sorely missed.

  1. Southampton’s passing must improve.

In Ronald Koeman’s signature style, pressing fullbacks help create overlapping oppoutunities and whip in crosses, yet in order for the flanks of the defence not to become exposed, passing and control of possession must be a priority. Too many times, especially in the first half, Southampton failed to retain possession for an extended period of time and this lead to fatal counter attacks.

  1. More creativity from the center is necessary.

Everton’s back four seemed impenetrable. This is also a week after 2 headed goals in a draw with Newcastle. More chances must be created in the center of the attacking third. This improved in the second half, but to no avail. Tinkering with the lineups could solve this problem. The Saints cannot become too reliant on Graziano’s head.

  1. Lukaku is a great player and a better man.

Hard to hate this guy even though he single handedly took three points from us. Exemplified when he went into the crowd to apologize after hitting a woman with a ball in warm-ups.

  1. Southampton’s transfer record must fail at some point.

It may be too soon to admit this, but the last two games have struck fear into Saint’s fans hearts. We all knew Schneiderlin and Clyne would be missed and although Cedric seems like a good replacement, a lot is still expected of the other signings. The last two results means expectations are high for the Premier League debut of Jordy Clasie. Another Centre Half must also step up or be bought to partner alongside Jose Fonte in the back, Yoshida is not good enough for the aspirations of the club this season.

Southampton take on FC Midtjylland in the Europa League Playoff at 7:45 BST in Denmark this coming Thursday.
