Saints are set to join the race for Yohan Cabaye if they miss out on their top target, Sevilla man Grzegorz Krychowiak.
The Spanish club want £22m for Krychowiak and having had an opening £9m bid rejected, the Saints could turn their attention to Cabaye who has been linked with Crystal Palace.
The PSG midfielder would be a replacement for fellow Frenchman Morgan Schneiderlin who looks set to leave St Mary’s this summer.
The Frenchman is not the first name on the Saints’ shopping list but Krychowiak, the man who helped Sevilla lift the Europa League last month, is only going to be sold for a figure closer to their valuation.
Cabaye, 29, who left Newcastle for a move to his home country in January 2014, has been targeted by teams in the Premier League after an unhappy spell at the French Champions.
At the time it was a move worth £19m plus add ons, but it isn’t known how much he would be sold for if he is to leave France.
The former Newcastle man has admitted that he is ready to quit the cash rolled club for a move back to England’s top tier.
He said: “sometimes it’s better to go backward in order to go forward. I enjoyed myself in England, in a league that works for me.
“Today, I am at PSG. Certainly, I’d like it to have happened differently, the club too, but that’s reality.”
Cabaye scored 17 goals in 79 appearances for the Geordie side, but has said that he wants the move away to ensure that he has a place in the France squad for the European Championships in 2016, hosted by his home country.
He ended in saying “If I had the chance to return to England, I hope to get it done…but there could be other destinations.”
