Manchester United have identified Arsenal target Morgan Schneiderlin as another possible summer signing, as they join the race for the French midfielder.
It has been well documented that over the past year the Saints man has expressed his desire to play in the Champions League if the opportunity arises.
Since last summer when Saints offloaded several players, Scheiderlin ensured that he would be staying for the short term but is expected to leave St Mary’s for a fee worth around £25 million this summer.
Manchester United are the latest club to be looking for his signature, as Manager Louis van Gaal sees the Frenchman as a long term replacement for Michael Carrick in centre midfield.
He caught van Gaal’s eye in an impressive performance in helping Southampton achieve their first league victory at Old Trafford for 27 years.
However Arsenal were the first club to show an interest in the midfielder, but the interest isn’t at all surprising for the fans of both clubs.
Due to the fact that manager Arsene Wenger tends to favour signing fellow compatriots as he feels that this is one way he is able to lure players the club but also because they still may be looking for that holding midfielder which could extend their chances of title challenge once more.
Wenger has come out in the past day and revealed that he isn’t going to ‘spend big’, so is he prepared to spend the money on Schneiderlin?
There are still two years left on his contract but if they try not to sell him then it could put them in a difficult position in terms of what sort of money the Saints get for him.
“I think my decision is made.
“The Champions League is my goal and if I leave Southampton it will be for a club in the Champions League.” Said the midfielder last week.
Whether the rumours are true or not, there is some good news, as the more interest there is in Morgan, the higher his price will be.
Especially with a debut season in the Europa League upon them, money could be key to finding new recruits.
