Nathaniel Clyne hinted that he will stay at St. Mary’s next season as he looks increasingly likely to snub Manchester United and sign a new contract.
Louis van Gaal is reportedly very interested in the player as he looks to strengthen in defence and Clyne has been one of the Premier League’s outstanding full-backs this season.
Clyne, 24, has only a year remaining on his current contract leaving his current club in an unenviable position as he could potentially force a move so that Southampton are not forced to let him go for free next season.
However, the England right-back has dealt Louis van Gaal’s side a blow as he appeared unconcerned about his international spot if he were to stay at Saints.
“As long as you’re playing well for your club and you’re doing ever so well in the Premier League then, yeah, you’ll get a chance, regardless of whether you’re in a top team or not,” said Clyne.
“But Southampton’s pushing up, so why can’t we be a top team?”
United are reportedly willing to entice Southampton into selling by offering Javier Hernandez in a player-plus-cash deal –the Saints have been interested in the Mexican striker who was loaned out to Real Madrid last season.
Clyne had been given an ultimatum by Saints boss Ronald Koeman and Clyne looked set to ignore this offer – that deadline has passed but the 24 year-old has since changed agents and talks have been much more promising according to Les Reed, Head of Football Development at Southampton.
