Southampton loanee, Toby Alderweireld wants to play in the Premier League next season but he is unsure as to whether that will be with the Saints, or not.
The Belgian defender has been one of the Saints’ star performers this season as the Saints conceded only 33 goals, second only to Chelsea in the Premier League this campaign.
Alderweireld’s future has been of much interest to Saints and other Premier League clubs, the South Cast club, as part of the original loan deal, have first option to buy the player from his, parent club, Atletico Madrid for £6.3million.
However, the Spanish side are almost certain to opt out of this clause, by paying £1.8million to Saints, enabling them to sell him for a greater transfer fee or keep him themselves.
Alderweireld has been open about his desire to stay in the Premier League but has said previously that his future will be decided by Atlectico.
“Southampton gave me that opportunity and it paid off, I think. I’ve had a fantastic year, I can’t lie about that, so, yes, I’d like to stay in the Premier League” said the 26 year-old.
“I really want to go to a club that really wants me.
“There are three options – stay with Atletico, stay with Southampton or go to another club. So we will see what happens.”
