Eljero Elia is uncertain of his Saints future but says that he just has to concentrate on his own performances in the final two games of the season.
“I don’t know”, was the response the winger gave after being asked about his future.
Elia joined on a short term deal until the end of the season in January from German side Werder Bremen after being out of favour by the Bundesliga side.
It seems to be a deal that will not be spoken about until the campaign reaches its conclusion but Elia hopes that he has done enough to keep his place at St Mary’s.
“The club say nothing about it.
“I speak with the coach about it, who was positive”, said the Dutchman.
If talks are positive then it may just be a case of a price sum being agreed for the 28 year old.
He seems certain that he will not be a Bremen player come the end of the summer transfer window and his current deal in Germany runs out at the end of next season.
“I have one contracted year with Werder Bremen.
“I will not stay at Werder Bremen, but I will go to another club then if they don’t want me.”
The young Dutchman has come back after suffering a knock in late February which kept him out of the Saints side going into March.
He says “after my injury, it was not so like before, but I keep fighting and doing my thing and I want to be important.”
The winger played for Holland in the 2010 World Cup final made his international come back this year, enjoyed a perfect debut when he bagged a winning brace which got the Saints three points away to Newcastle in January.
With European football still within the Saints grasp, Koeman has already stated his intentions to increase squad numbers if Europa League qualification is achieved.
This would surely increase Elia’s chances of staying on at St Mary’s and getting a permanent deal.
