Gazzzaniga Set To Retain Starting Spot

Paulo Gazzaniga will keep  his place in goal for Southampton despite a shaky performance in his return to the first team on Saturday against Leicester.

The Argentinian made his first Premier League appearance of the season in a surprise move by Ronald Koeman as he dropped veteran keeper Kelvin Davis who was in line to make his 300th appearance for the club.

However, the 23 year-old didn’t do much to help his cause to prove to Koeman that he is ready to step up from the Under-21s as his poor clearance led to Leicester’s second goal.

Gazzaniga has, however, been promised that he will get another chance to show his Dutch boss he can handle the pressure of the first team in this weekend’s clash at St. Mary’s against Aston Villa.

Koeman said: “To make really the good decisions I like to see Paulo playing – not playing with the under-21s, not training every day with group, but playing two games, this and next week.

“Paulo will play next week again to make up our minds for next season and that’s the reason and nothing else.”

Koeman is taking a look at his goalkeeping options after Fraser Forster’s injury looks like it will keep him out for much of next season.

“We spoke to Kelvin and we spoke to Paulo. It’s all about the situation we have for the next season about Fraser Forster.

“He will be out for a long time. Still we know not until when.”
