Southampton defender, Toby Alderweireld, has said that he wants to stay at Southampton, however admitted the decision was not up to him.
Rumours over the Belgian international’s future have been circulating in recent weeks as interest from around England is high, but Alderweireld revealed his preferred option would be to stay at Southampton.
The defender is on the South Coast on a season-long loan from Atletico Madrid and despite the 26 year-old’s preference to stay at Saints the decision is with his parent club.
Speaking to the BBC, Alderweireld said: “If I could choose then of course I would like to stay here.”
“It’s not up to me. Atletico could decide that they want me back. I have two years left there so it is difficult for me to answer the question.
“I’m enjoying the Premier League, I’m enjoying playing for Southampton – I love the club and I love the fans.
“I am enjoying it here and my mind and focus is on Southampton.”
