After Tuesday’s 1-0 win at home to Crystal Palace Saints midfielder James Ward-Prowse knows the next few weeks are vital in their Champions League push.
When speaking to the Official Southampton Youtube Channel the midfielder said “These next 10 games are probably the biggest in the club’s history and we’re determined as a group of players to make history for the club.
“We want to get us to the biggest stage in the world where we feel we belong with the best teams and best players in the world.”
After Tuesday’s win, Ronald Koeman’s side jetted off to Switzerland on a team-building trip and the England Under-21 international believes it will be beneficial for the team to get away after poor form has seen them drop out of the top four.
“I think it will be great to just have a good time, the pressure of the Premier League is massive, especially where we are in the table.
“It’s good to get away, put our feet up and have a bit of a laugh with the group. It should be a good bit of fun and then we’ll move on from there.”
The 20 year-old came on as a substitute in the scrappy 1-0 win on Tuesday and played a pivotal role in the winning goal; it was his effort that Speroni parried into the path of Sadio Mane who tucked away the winner.
Ward-Prowse admitted the performance against the Eagles wasn’t the prettiest but knew that the result was all-important and was pleased with the character shown by the team to end their poor run of form.
“We haven’t been on the best of runs lately and it’s great to obviously get the three points and move forward. You could feel the whole stadium was pleased.
“It wasn’t a pretty performance, not a vintage Southampton display, but we dug deep, the fans got behind us and I think we showed great character.”
Southampton’s next opponents are Premier League leaders Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
