Southampton Player Ratings: Arsenal (H)

Southampton secured their first home win of the season as they defeated Arsenal 3-2 on Sunday afternoon.

In what was Ralph Hasenhuttl’s St Mary’s Stadium debut, the Saints played with plenty of aggression and put an end to the Gunners’ 22-game unbeaten run in all competitions.

Danny Ings returned to the starting line-up and gave the hosts the lead with a thumping header after a good cross from Matt Targett.

Arsenal bounced back, though, and levelled the scoring courtesy of a good header from Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The Saints found themselves back in front before the half-time whistle blew, however. Ings netted his second of the afternoon in fine fashion as his header looped over Bernd Leno.

Unai Emery’s men came out of the blocks firing following the interval and were back on level terms shortly after the restart. Mkhitaryan’s effort deflected off Jannik Vestergaard and beyond Alex McCarthy’s reach.

The decisive moment in the match came in the 86th minute as Southampton were able to clinch only their second win of the season as two substitutes combined.

Shane Long clipped a ball to the back post and on to the head of Charlie Austin, who could not miss from just yards out.

Here are our Southampton player ratings from the match, along with an additional score for new boss Hasenhuttl.
