Southampton were eliminated from the Carabao Cup at the fourth round stage after Leicester City won 6-5 on penalties.
Saints boss Mark Hughes rung the changes and fielded a youthful side at the King Power Stadium. Michael Obafemi and Yan Valery made their senior debuts for the club.
The Foxes were also heavily rotated, as manager Claude Puel made nine changes to the team that drew 1-1 with Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday afternoon.
Southampton struggled to create chances throughout the match but squandered a golden opportunity to net as Obafemi could not convert from just yards out after Nathan Redmond’s effort hit the crossbar.
Hughes’ men thought they had nicked a winner in the closing stages of the encounter but after a VAR check, Steven Davis’ goal was ruled out because of a handball in the buildup.
Manolo Gabbiadini also came agonisingly close in the fifth minute of stoppage time but he, too, hit the bar with a free-kick.
The encounter was decided by a penalty shootout and Leicester came out on top after Gabbiadini failed to dispatch his penalty and Nampalys Mendy converted.
