Three standout Saints: Stoke (H)
Southampton held Stoke to a goalless draw on a cold Saturday afternoon at St Mary’s.
The Saints have now managed to break a club record of not winning in eight home games.
Statistically, Mauricio Pellegrino’s side controlled the game, especially in corners so it’s surprising how they didn’t manage to score even one goal.
Despite last week’s goalscorer Manolo Gabbiadini coming in the second half, the Saints still could not find that decisive goal to give them the win.
Southampton have now dropped down to 17th and one point off the relegation zone.
It was one of those games again where no player had an exceptional performance and it’s becoming progressively more difficult to pick three standout players. However, I have managed to whittle down the three best players from Saturday’s game against Stoke.
Josh Sims
After impressing against Burnley, Sims was rewarded by starting against Stoke. He brought pace into the game and looked promising when attacking. With a little more experience, he could be a valuable player in years to come.
Ryan Bertrand
The captain put in a good performance on Saturday. He used his experience effectively in moving the ball forward and he put in a decent defensive shift to keep the likes of Xherdan Shaqiri quiet.
Mario Lemina
The Gabonese international once again shows why he’s a class above everyone else on the pitch. He showcased his unbelievable ball control and skills throughout the game and with each match, he is getting better and showing why he’s a vital player in this side.
