Southampton were cruelly beaten by a poor Stoke City side as in the dying minutes of the game ex-Saints striker Peter Crouch scored a tap in to earn the home side three points.
Mauricio Pellegrino made one change to the side that lost to Manchester United as Virgil van Dijk started his first game since January, replacing Wesley Hoedt.
Stoke started the first half well but couldn’t grab an early goal, forcing a few good saves from Saints keeper Fraser Forster.
The hosts did grab the opening goal later on though, as a powerful cross from Xherdan Shaqiri found the head of Mame Diouf, who scored from close range.
It could have been worse for Saints, as Saido Berahino made the most of a tiny bit of contact from Van Dijk in the box to hand the hosts a penalty but Forster saved the resulting sport kick, diving to his left and palming away Berahino’s effort, meaning that it was just the one goal in it at the break.
Saints looked better after the restart, and created most of the chances, with Shane Long, Van Dijk, Mario Lemina, Nathan Redmond and Dusan Tadic all getting chances.
Saints finally got an equaliser as substitute Sofiane Boufal dribbled into the penalty area, before crossing to Maya Yoshida, who scored a lovely volley.
Saints dominated for the rest of the match, creating chance after chance after chance, but couldn’t get another goal.
It was then substitute Crouch who found a winner. As all the Saints players were scrambling to win the ball back, it fell to the feet of Crouch to tap home and win the game for Stoke.
