Southampton 0-2 Wolves: Match report

Southampton were eliminated in the second round of the Carabao Cup at the hands of Championship side, Wolves.

Pellegrino named a strong side which included giving a competitive debut to Jan Bednarek.

Wolves were off to a great start in their Championship campaign, sat in third place and clearly brought that confidence into the cup game, as it was them who created the first chance of the game, as some high pressing caught out Dusan Tadic and Wolves’ wing back Ruben Vinagre managed to get around Jeremy Pied and send Nouha Dicko into goal, but the angle was too tight and he couldn’t quite find the finish past Fraser Forster.

Southampton were lucky to not be a goal behind shortly after as some risky play from Sofiane Boufal and Pied in their own half gave Ivan Cavaleiro the perfect opportunity to square the ball to Dicko, who had an open goal to aim at, but he couldn’t make the correct contact with the ball and the score remained 0-0.

Southampton’s best two chances both came from set pieces, firstly, a corner kick whipped in by James Ward-Prowse was met by Maya Yoshida who headed wide and secondly a free kick, again, taken by Ward-Prowse, but this time it was met by Bednarek, whose header forced a fantastic, reflex save from Will Norris.

It was Wolves though who broke the deadlock after 67 minutes of play, as a corner kick taken by Cavaleiro was met by the skipper Danny Bath, and the ball slowly found its way into the net which seemingly could’ve been saved by either Forster or Ward-Prowse who was stood on the line.

Wolves sealed the deal 20 minutes later and secured their place in the third round of the Carabao Cup after some absolutely shambolic defending from Southampton allowed Michal Zyro to run towards Forster’s goal and find Donovan Wilson who scooped the ball into the bottom corner.

Saints fans were left disappointed by both the result and the performance of the team and hope that this won’t be a common occurrence. Southampton face Huddersfield on Saturday who are unbeaten in two league games, as well as beating Rotherham in the Carabao Cup.
