Southampton put in a woeful performance as they dropped out of the League Cup on Wednesday to a Wolves team who made many changes to their starting line-up.
In what was an incredibly dull first half of football, Saints resembled a team void of ideas, creativity and desire. Mauricio Pellegrino went with a 3-4-3 formation against the Championship side, a move which massively backfired due to a lack of understanding and fluidity from the team.
There were very few opportunities in the first half, reflected in Charlie Austin’s clear frustrations. Saints lacked movement in attacking areas and allowed Wolves to press and contain them fairly easily.
Fans will have been surprised to have seen no substitutions at half time and instead, had to wait until Danny Batth had given Wolves a deserved lead to see the introductions of Shane Long, Nathan Redmond and Manolo Gabbiadini.
Even then, Saints were unable to find a breakthrough and eventually conceded a soft second through Donovan Wilson.
Here are five things that we learnt from the disappointing result.
