New Southampton signing Martin Caceres could feature for the under-23 side when they face Chelsea on Monday night.
The central defender signed for Southampton on a free after the end of the January transfer window, following the club’s failure to bring in a defender.
Former captain Jose Fonte left the club to sign for West Ham in January but Southampton were unable to find a replacement in time for the end of the window.
Claude Puel was then hit with a double blow as he lost Virgil Van Dijk to injury, who was announced as Fonte’s successor to the captaincy.
The Saints travel to face Watford tomorrow in the Premier League but it appears as though Caceres will not be given the chance to impress from the start.
The defender has not played a single minute of action this season after leaving Juventus at the end of last season and needs time to bed in.
Speaking to Southampton’s website, Puel said this:
He improves step-by-step every training session. I hope he continues this work.
I don’t know if he can start the next game, or perhaps to see him also with the opportunity to play with the Under-23s against Chelsea on Monday.
It’s perhaps an opportunity to make a good official game against the good young players of Chelsea and see him in this situation.
