Southampton missed the chance to move further clear of the relegation zone after they fell to a 3-1 defeat at home to title-chasing Liverpool.
This result leaves Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side five points clear of the drop following another spirited display.
The Saints opened the scoring inside 10 minutes when a Ryan Bertrand ball led to a Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg flicked header which fell to Shane Long to smash home.
Southampton were making a good account of themselves and were playing some great football as Shane Long had a brilliant chance to make it 2-0.
Liverpool equalised after 35 minutes in controversial style as replays should a ball through to Mo Salah should have been flagged for offside in the build up.
Instead, play continued which eventually led to Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross headed home by Naby Keita.
The visitors then took the lead when Salah steered the ball into the corner from a counter-attack.
Liverpool then added a third through Jordan Henderson with five minutes to play.
