Our man of the match: Brentford (H)
Here we are, the first man of the match award for the 2017/18 season – albeit for pre-season.
If you did not already know, we hand out a man of the match award after every Southampton game.
This leads to the player of the month and player of the season award/s throughout the campaign.
Nathan Redmond won the most last season, claiming the Read Southampton player of the season award (I’m sure he’s delighted).
With it being pre-season, we will be doing a player of pre-season – with our man of the match today being the first of many across the summer.
Southampton were held to a 2-2 draw by Championship side Brentford on Saturday.
There were some good performances across the park, with a special mention to Sofiane Boufal.
Our man of the match, though, is the main man Charlie Austin.
The English forward netted both of Southampton’s goals, with one being a calm, low, right-footed finish and the other being a first-time left-footed strike into the roof of the net from 12-yards.
Austin led the line very well, bringing others into play using his strength on the ball.
His finishing was superb, obviously with the two goals, and he gave a fantastic all-round performance.
