To look back the last time Liverpool travelled to St Mary’s, you only have to cast your minds back to the 11th of January 2017. The scene was set for the first leg of a semi-final in the Carabao Cup, formerly known as the EFL Cup.

Claude Puel’s men weren’t having the best of Januarys, with a 3-0 defeat to Everton and a scrappy 2-2 draw with Norwich in the FA Cup under their belts. Saints were massively written off for this cup tie against Liverpool, and the team from Merseyside were quite obviously the favourites.

The scene was set for a stunning game under the lights and St Mary’s. Southampton had the chance of getting to a final and it meant a lot to the fans. The older fans were hoping to reminisce about the previous finals and how good the Saints used to be. The younger fans were just hoping for a trip to Wembley for the scrapbook.

With just 20 minutes gone, Nathan Redmond struck low and hard past Loris Karius to give Southampton a massive lead in this semi-final first leg. The game dragged on from there and that is how it would finish; Southampton 1-0 Liverpool.

A lot has changed since then. Southampton are potentially in a relegation battle and Liverpool, the polar opposite, are chasing the top four. One thing has stayed the same, though, is that Southampton are the underdogs. Under the management of Ronald Koeman and Mauricio Pochettino, we used to thrive being the underdogs. Teams like Liverpool and Manchester City used to fear coming to St Mary’s, as we’d always be up for a good performance.

But in the past couple of seasons, St Mary’s has been anything but that. This season we only have two wins at home and Liverpool will be fairly confident coming into this one.

Both teams need the points for respective reasons, so this has the making of a very good game. If we stick to our game plan and take our chances, I truly believe we could get a draw out of this one, my prediction:

Southampton 1-1 Liverpool
