# Southampton had the last laugh when it came to Victor Wanyama

Victor Wanyama left Tottenham earlier this year on a [free transfer](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/51730340), ending his four-year association in north London.

The midfielder moved to the MLS to sign for the Montreal Impact and has since made [18 league appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/victor-wanyama/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/77760).

The Kenyan only managed [15 top-flight appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/victor-wanyama/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/77760) for Spurs in his last two campaigns, falling out of favour under both Mauricio Pochettino and Jose Mourinho.

Wanyama [reportedly forced](https://metro.co.uk/2016/04/21/victor-wanyama-stalling-on-southampton-contract-to-force-tottenham-transfer-5830842/) through his Southampton exit back in 2016 after stalling over a new deal, with the Saints collecting [£12.96million](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-southampton/rekordabgaenge/verein/180) for his services.

However, despite a promising start, things didn’t work out for the midfielder, with Southampton eventually having the last laugh.

The 29-year-old, who is now worth [£5.85m](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-southampton/rekordabgaenge/verein/180), was a [regular](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-southampton/rekordabgaenge/verein/180) at St Mary’s during the 2014/15 and 2015/16 campaigns, with his impressive displays catching Spurs’ eye.

Wanyama averaged a WhoScored rating of [7.12 and 7.02](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/71714/History/Victor-Wanyama) during those seasons on the south coast. His first season with Tottenham saw that rating climb to [7.21](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/71714/History/Victor-Wanyama), however, following the 2016/17 season, his form gradually declined.

The midfielder’s final season in the capital saw him finish with a lowly [6.01](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/71714/History/Victor-Wanyama) rating, proving that on the whole, the Saints, even if they weren’t in total control, were ultimately right to cash in on the player four years earlier.

Wanyama made [97 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/victor-wanyama/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/77760) for both the Saints and Spurs, but the [ratings show](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/71714/History/Victor-Wanyama) that Southampton got the most out of the no-nonsense midfielder.

Defensive midfielder Oriol Romeu has turned out to be Wanyama’s replacement, joining from Chelsea for [£5million](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/33890418).

The Spaniard has been praised by both Saints [supporters](https://www.footballfancast.com/premier-league/southampton/southampton-fans-praise-oriol-romeu-for-his-performance-in-1-1-draw-with-man-utd) and manager [Ralph Hasenhuttl](https://www.expressandstar.com/sport/uk-sports/2020/10/04/ralph-hasenhuttl-hails-goalscorer-oriol-romeus-professionalism-after-saints-win/) over the last 12 months, underlying another great piece of transfer business by the club.

Wanyama’s departure may have [caused some worry](https://www.hitc.com/en-gb/2016/05/19/report-southampton-worried-about-losing-one-time-tottenham-targe/) at the time, but as the years have gone on, the Saints have, as they do so well, adapted and have turned out to be on the better end of a deal once again.
