Southampton were among the teams to reportedly watch Spezia forward David Okereke over the weekend.
According to reports in Italy from Il Secolo XIX, as cited on Calcio Mercato, both the Saints and Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt were casting an eye over the striker during Spezia’s clash with Ascoli.
Okereke has been heavily linked with a move away from Spezia for some time now and it appears that Southampton are the latest club to take an interest in the player.
With nine goals to his name this season in Serie B, the Nigerian is attracting a lot of interest from the Italian top flight and further afield.
Both Southampton and Frankfurt look likely to strengthen in the final third when the summer transfer window opens.
Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men have been short on goals this season, while the Bundesliga side face the prospect of cashing in on Luka Jovic, who is a wanted man across Europe after his fine form this season.
Why a move for David Okereke makes sense for Southampton
Okereke is a young and raw talent, with his best form yet to come later down the line. It could be a very shrewd piece of business from the Saints to bring him in at a young age.
With potential comes interest from elsewhere. Okereke is already on the radar of some of Europe’s top clubs and that interest will only increase if he impresses on his next move.
While no one likes to think about it, the player’s huge re-sale potential will be something the club consider.
Quality and depth needed
Ultimately, it’s a position Southampton need to address. In the final third, the club have been light on goals this season and cannot afford to go into next season with the same problem.
Hasenhuttl's man management
Hasenhuttl has already shown his qualities as a man manager during his time in the Premier League. The prospect of him nurturing young talent like Okereke at the club will only excite supporters.
