Oriol Romeu reflects on ‘tough’ season with Southampton
Southampton midfielder Oriol Romeu has been looking back on a ‘tough’ season for the club.
The Spaniard, as quoted by the Daily Echo, discussed the 2017/18 season on both an individual and team level, reflecting on the struggles that Saints faced throughout.
It has been tough, I’ve had so many ups and downs personally, so I’d like to improve that. I’d like to be more consistent. The last games I’ve felt much better and I’ve enjoyed more and I could feel the team was doing better, so I appreciated that.
That’s the thing I want to do for next season. I probably haven’t felt as good as I did last season but that’s part of football. Some seasons are better some seasons are worse but we need to go again on what we haven’t done right.
Romeu was generally a mainstay under both Mauricio Pellegrino and Mark Hughes in the recently-concluded Premier League season but struggled to make a lasting influence.
Precedently, Romeu enjoyed a tremendous season under Claude Puel as Saints finished in 8th place. It was a campaign of frustration in the following term, however, with Romeu struggling to develop consistency and form.
The former Barcelona midfielder is likely to stay at St Mary’s this summer as the club aim to bounce back after their treacherous recent campaign.
Romeu spoke of the importance of making a strong start to next season, with Saints set for yet another difficult season in the Premier League following their lucky escape.
We need to start next season with the same feeling again. We need to show the fans that we’re there and to show the manager we’re here to compete. Everyone of us has to push the right way. That’s the way we want to start next season.
