Southampton defender Cedric Soares has spoken of his disappointment at how his side failed to respond in the second-half against Liverpool.
Saints succumbed to yet another defeat in the Premier League on Sunday, with the Reds coming away as comfortable winners. First-half goals from Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah were enough to help Jurgen Klopp’s side to a comprehensive three points.
Cedric spoke to the club’s official website following the defeat and was left to rue Saints’ insufficient efforts after the interval.
We started the game well in the first half, but we suffered with a goal we shouldn’t have suffered in that moment. We had a good reaction after the first goal, but then they scored a second goal very similar to the first one.
After that, we went a little bit down and the second half was not the greatest reaction we should have. We knew about the pace they have up front. Everyone knows that Liverpool have a very good squad, but it’s not really just about that.
The Portugal international, much like many of Saints’ usually consistent performers, did not play well against Liverpool and will be hoping to improve in the coming weeks as the team look to pull themselves out of the relegation zone.
Cedric called for togetherness and belief from his side and insisted that they would only progress if they are “all on the same page”.
It’s also about us. If you are all on the same page, we would not worry about it. It does not matter if we play Liverpool, Man City, Manchester United… whatever. We need to come together and fight.
Next up for Southampton is West Brom away in the fifth round of the FA Cup.
