Southampton want to sign Nicolas Gaitan from Atletico Madrid, the Daily Mail reports, but wages could be a stumbling block in any potential deal.
The Argentine winger is currently out of favour under Diego Simeone and is looking all but set to leave Atletico in the January transfer window. A loan deal appears to be the most likely outcome for Gaitan this month.
Saints work within a strict financial structure when it comes down to wages. Virgil van Dijk was the club’s highest earner at around £70,000 per week according to reports, and the Daily Mail claim that Gaitan earns a whopping £100,000 per week at Atletico.
The former Benfica man is keen to rejuvenate himself elsewhere as he looks to break into the Argentina squad for the World Cup at the end of the season.
Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino has reportedly been monitoring Gaitan’s situation at the La Liga outfit since Christmas, and it seems that the club’s interest in the experienced midfielder is genuine.
