# Saints missed out on Spurs winger last summer

According to recent [reports](https://sportwitness.ning.com/forum/topics/tottenham-and-southampton-have-made-approach-for-same-midfielder), Tottenham surprisingly found themselves in another transfer battle with Southampton last summer as Spurs narrowly beat Saints to the signing of promising winger Clinton N’Jie.

The two clubs were involved in a highly complicated deal for defender Toby Alderweireld as the Belgian ended up joining Spurs after a season on loan at St Mary’s, however it has recently been revealed that the south coast club also found themselves in the race for the Cameroon international.

It is believed that Saints were tracking N’Jie’s progress at French giants Lyon before his move to Tottenham due to former Southampton chief scout Paul Mitchell joining the North London club last year. This meant that transfer targets from Mitchell’s time at Southampton were inevitably carried over to Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham and N’Jie was signed up by Spurs for a hefty price.

The young Cameroonian winger has got off to a slow start at White Hart Lane, making just three competitive appearances before picking up an injury that has certainly hindered his progress and development at the club.

However, given Southampton’s newly found attacking depth, N’Jie looks as though he was never really needed.

Would you have liked to have seen N’Jie for the Saints?
