Koeman not surprised at tough season

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman has admitted that he was expecting this season to be a far more difficult than last season’s extremely successful campaign.

A tough season was always in the offing after failing to sign the outstanding Toby Alderweireld on a permanent basis, as well as losing right-back Nathaniel Clyne and the heart of the midfield, Morgan Schneiderlin.

Saints are currently struggling in the Premier League, despite sitting in 12th place, without a win in six consecutive games and finding goals hard to come by.

It’s difficult for the players because we have the experience from last year on how nice it can be. We knew beforehand it could be a difficult season, but still it’s not too late. We know we need a win. The best medicine is winning.

Koeman has also pointed out the lack of confidence that his side are currently showing, stating that it has had a considerable effect on their recent performances and the results that come with them.

We had a bad run last year, but not like this one. It means maybe a little bit of lack in confidence, in belief.

Southampton and Koeman will hope that their fortunes are to change on Boxing Day as they gear up to face in-form Arsenal at St. Mary’s.
